Misal Pav is a popular vegetarian dish from Nashik, India. It is an easy-to-make traditional Maharashtrian recipe, which is a perfect delight for the taste buds.
It consists of a Misal and a Pav. Misal is a spicy curry made from moth beans and Pav is typically a type of Indian bread.
The curry is made of a whole lot of eclectic spices, onion, garlic, ginger, and chillies. The final dish is topped with boiled potatoes, chiwda, sev, chopped onions, coriander, and green chillies and served with a dash of lemon.

Misal pav from “Pune” is known for its high spice content and unique taste. There are different versions of misal pav such as Kolhapuri misal, Khandeshi misal, and Nashik misal.
Misal Pav Recipe
Ingredients (Servings 4)
For making paste for gravy
2 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped tomato
3/4 cup grated coconut
For making red gravy
3 tablespoon oil
Spice Paste (as above)
Salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin-coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon & clove powder
3 cups water (or as required to adjust the consistency)
For making Usal
3 tablespoon oil
¼ mustard seeds
¼ cumin seeds
1 teaspoon ginger paste
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1/2 teaspoon hing (asafetida)
1 1/2 cups moth bean sprouts (matki sprouts) soaked overnight
1 cup boiled potato (cut into square pieces)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon-clove powder
1 lime juice
3 cups water (or as required) Salt to taste
For garnishing
To serve with:
Pav, a slice of lemon
Chopped onion
Chopped coriander
Mix dry farsan (optional)
How to make Misal Pav
Step 1: Boil sprouts and potatoes.
1. For preparing this beguiling recipe, first, rinse the sprouts in running water and then drain them and add them to the pressure cooker.
2. Then add 2 medium-sized chopped potatoes and ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder and salt as required.
3. Add enough water to cover them and pressure cook it for 2-3 whistles.
Step 2: Making the paste.
1. For making the paste, add 2 tablespoon oil in a small pan and then 1 teaspoon ginger paste, 1 teaspoon garlic paste, and 1 cup chopped onion.
2. Sauté it till onion becomes translucent and adds 1 cup chopped tomatoes and ¾ cup grated coconuts.
3. Mix well and sauté it for a few minutes and later grinds it into a smooth paste.
Step 3: Making the gravy.
1. Take a small pan and heat some oil. Then add the ready paste into it and sauté
for 2 minutes.
2. And then add ½ teaspoon red chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon garam masala, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp cumin-coriander powder, 1/2 tsp cinnamon & clove powder.
3. Then add 3 cups of water and salt as required.
4. Cook it till the mixture starts to leave oil and then keep aside it.
Step 4: Making Usal for Misal Pav.
1. Heat 3 tablespoon oil in another pan and add some mustard seeds and cumin seeds and sauté till it becomes golden.
2. Add 1 teaspoon ginger paste, 1 teaspoon garlic paste, and ½ teaspoon asafetida. Sauté it for 2 minutes. And then add boiled sprouts and potatoes into it.
3. Then add salt as required, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon garam masala, ½ teaspoon clove-cinnamon powder, and lime juice and water to it.
4. Cook it for while and transfer it into a separate bowl.
Step 5: Assembling the Misal Pav.
1. Take a serving bowl and pour usal into it. And then pour the red gravy into it.
2. Then topped the usal with finely chopped onions and garnish it with chopped coriander.
Serve hot and delicious Misal with the Pav and lemon and farsan.
